Isle of Tears

“One day, we’ll meet again, under the pot (Parliament of Hong Kong) and then we take off our masks.”

A fictional short movie, created during the protests in Hong Kong in 2019, by BouDai12, an international art collective, which was spontaneously formed during the protests in Hong Kong.

“Isle of tears” is a fictional documentary movie, produced by the international art collective in the aftermath of the protests in Hong Kong in 2019. They used found footage, documentary images shot by BouDai12 during the protests and fictional images shot by BouDai12 in Zurich in December 2019.

The movie is rather a time capsule of the emotions of that specific time and less an explanation of the situation.

“Isle of Tears” won best documentary @ LUFF in Lausanne in 2020.

Intervention of the Chinese embassy in Switzerland
Isle of Tears caused a controversy during the screening of the film at the Campus of the Faculty of Fine Arts Zurich. The Chinese embassy intervened against the film, whereupon BouDai12 went to the press to draw attention to the influence of the Chinese state on Swiss universities.

Fuck you, ZHdK! Since 2019, the university has increased the intense collaboration with the Harbin Institute of Technology in Shenzhen, China, which has strong ties to the Chinese military.
